The excitement is wild as the world's best freestyle motocross riders count down to this season's climax on August 23: the first Red Bull X-Fighters World Tour final on the African continent.
The anticipation for Saturday's Red Bull X-Fighters contest in South Africa could hardly be higher. Not only is the showdown at Pretoria's historic Union Buildings the fiftieth contest in the 14 seasons of Red Bull X-Fighters competition, but it's also the 2014 World Tour final.
Offering a taste of what audiences will experience at the biggest track of the year, South Africa's own Nick de Wit and Spain's Maikel Melero went to the wide-open savanna, throwing down big tricks and taking inspiration from a Cradle of Humankind World Heritage site, where many scientists believe the first humans evolved.
In the shadow of some of the planet's oldest mountains, de Wit and Melero produced some evolutionary moves of their own at the Glen Afric Country Lodge wildlife sanctuary. Proud African warriors surveyed the bold moves with approval, and a curious giraffe loped over to check out the scene.
De Wit has never lost a competition in South Africa, but he'll have his work cut out for him on Saturday as he faces off against the other 11 top international competitors – including the two men who are neck-and-neck for the World Tour title: Levi Sherwood of New Zealand and Josh Sheehan of Australia. With only five points separating the pair from Down Under at the top of the standings, Sherwood and Sheehan are the favorites to win the 2014 title of the world's most prestigious freestyle motocross event series on Saturday afternoon.
